Off-the-Grid Modern Cabin | Park City, UT

When architecture becomes too rigid, sometimes it's nice to break away from the grid.  The Stagecoach Dwelling does this in form and function.

Formally, the main living space of the home resides in the round. A prefabricated yurt structure [manufactured by Smiling Woods Yurts] breaks away from the grid-based annex which houses the secondary functions of the building.

The large arcing canopy over the outdoor living room shelters the space beneath.  Furthermore, the canopy supports an extensive grid of photovoltaic panels that, thanks to the arc, are optimized to take full advantage of the sun's power during all times of the year.

Functionally, the project is completely off-grid.  A well for water, septic for sanitary, and photovoltaic powered batteries leave this structure free from utility companies and monthly bills.  The home even charges the owners' 'electric car.

Located at 7,700' elevation and some distance from the city, the very conscientious clients wanted to demonstrate that one doesn't have to compromise style and comfort in order to be completely sustainable.
