MODERN FAMILY : Laying low on the land, resting oblique to the river bank, an inconspicuous home speaks to a history of place while not appearing overtly ostentatious. Indoor spaces extend out to the property, welcoming all family and guests, nearly doubling interior living area.
SIGHTLINES : Predominately bordered by the Columbia River, views of your southern neighbor are paramount to the home design. Rotating the plan off the cardinal axis allows each room to capture the mighty body of water. A rotated orientation affords the main living space a vantage point to navigate up and down river, similar to the Cape Horn perch. Entering the home, you and your guests will always be seeing through the space towards the design inspiration.
COURTYARD : Situated at the crux of the home, a raised patio greets guests at entry, calmly saying hello. Screened by the magnolia and cherry trees, this outdoor living space doubles as a shady summer spot. A dutifully arranged basalt stone garden sculpture enhances this meditative space.
FUNCTION : Dancing around the existing trees on site, the house is organized to separate public and private spaces while taking advantage of the tall canopies for passive shading. The kitchen, dining and living spaces are the center of the home, flanked by the guest wing in one direction and the master suite extending perpendicularly.
MATERIALS : To achieve large open spaces, cross-laminated timber columns and beams frame glass walls which surround the living area. Stone volumes provide mass and solidity to lower portions of the home, a contrast to the ‘see-thru’ feeling of the main entertaining space. Overhung roofs clad in metal protect the locally sourced wood soffits, as well as the interior from unwanted solar heat gain.
OUTSIDE IN : Sure you could build a glass box along the river front, but purposefully placed windows and doors articulate an interior experience of the natural environment as if you’re outside without blowing the budget. Extra tall glass doors open toward the river, with long narrow windows becoming frames of the expansive green yard and mature vegetation.
DETACHED GARAGE : When a garage competes with the big river, you have to reduce the scale of a continuous 5-car space. A 2-car + work area attaches to the house, with a 3-car detached garage and storage space adjacent the home and apple tree with tremendous character.
