STRONG AXIS : There exists an obvious line through the heart of the Biddle property. Personally I find this not so imaginary line sacred. From the moment you arrive ones eye and progress are controlled by this wonderful force. The architecture is designed to encourage and enhance this consciousness. The home acts more like a gate, allowing you to move uninterrupted from the street all the way to the river landing.

PATH : If a path builder could build a house, this is what it would look like. Simple straight forward circulation with moments of pause and always concluding at a point of interest.

GARDEN : When you arrive at the home your are first greeted by the garden. This land has been occupied by naturalists for generations. The garden acts as a living history to the previous owners as well as a crash course on northwest shade based flora. Imagine the smell of Arancus Dioicus [goats beard] wafting about the house on a calm summer eve.

OUTDOOR LIVING: The home is graced with a multitude of outdoor living spaces. Given the time of year, your mood or your party size there is a comfortable space waiting for you.

BASALT : The home is built from locally quarried stone. The same stone that Biddle carved his famous path from. The mass lends to a feeling of permanence and importance, good for a home to last the ages.

WOOD : It would be great to re-use as much wood as possible from the previous abode. The quality of wood in that old house can not be matched by todays stock. TBD: If we could get an engineer to allow us to laminate existing studs into gluelam beams.. that would be incredible.

TREES : The trees on this site are old and spectacular. It would be in poor taste to remove them or turn ones attention away. The house is designed around the trees, keeping them all as they were found. Besides the obvious summer shade and winter sun, the trees frame the mighty Columbia better than any architect.

POOL : The pool is appropriately located just off the kitchen area. People love congregating in the kitchen and around the pool, why not make the transition that much easier.
