KEEP IT SIMPLE : Laying low on the land, two rectilinear forms define home and garage, connected spatially via roof and patio. Detached yet adjacent each other, these elementary forms adorned in humble materials minimize the visual influence against the coral rock outcropping on site - and the budgetary impact on the bank account.

SIGHT LINES : Placing the home nearer the eastern portion of the survey assures your master suite welcomes the day with a La Sal Mountain vantage. The living space faces due south, framing an off-center composition of your neighbor, the sandstone knoll. This siting allows the home to rest along the natural contours, reducing further scarring to the earth.

OVER HUNG : Shade is a requirement of life in the desert. The singular roof serves as canopy for outdoor space, and a means of controlling unwanted solar heat gain. Deeper on the south and western faces, the roof is positioned to allow the winter rays inside and keep the summer sun at bay.

#OPTOUTSIDE : Varied exterior spaces situate around the home, affording year-round time out of doors. The northern summer patio nestles into the landscape, while the winter patio extends southward, dual continuations of the interior living area. A covered hang out to the west greets guests at entry and creates a space to enjoy temperate sunsets.

MATERIALS : We know how brutal the desert climate can be throughout the year - scorching in the summer and wicked in the winter. As such, fluted, robust and maintenance-free lime plaster stucco clads the walls between corner windows and floor-to-ceiling, sliding glass doors.

INSULATE : Given the extreme temperature swings between seasons, or even in a day, superior thermal protection for the home is achieved with continuous exterior insulation. A thick ceiling plane and plenty of under slab insulation allow for a densely packed, tightly sealed building envelope, keeping you cool in the summer and warm all winter.

FIRE PLACE : Mitigating risk of wild land fire is critical in remote environments, yet simultaneously we desire the primal feeling being under the stars against the warm glow of burning carbon. With that in mind, three fireplaces occur in different spaces to appreciate at different times of the day - one inside the home, aside the view; one under the covered patio ,used during inclement weather; and the third, a fire pit pulled away from the home.
