Toll Canyon is a modern hillside home in Park City, Utah, designed to settle into its slope rather than flatten it. Following the site's natural contours, the home minimizes excavation and retaining walls, then does something a little daring: the main living level cantilevers out from the mountainside, creating a sheltered outdoor room tucked beneath.
The design is quietly engineered around the sun. South-facing windows pair with calculated overhangs that block the high summer light and welcome the low winter sun, while concrete floors absorb that warmth by day and release it slowly at night. Even the roof's pitch is set to carry solar panels at their ideal angle.
Inside, space is spent where it earns its keep: the main level does away with hallways, and the living room opens into a vaulted ceiling. Outside, an outdoor kitchen with a built-in parrilla and a covered living room with a fireplace extend the season in both directions, a home that lives lightly on its mountain, turned fully toward the views.
