Situated on the ‘homestead’ site of a rural mountain neighborhood outside Ketchum, Idaho, a small gable roof cabin occupied the property - quaint and content as the structure sat, the house did not function in a manner the current owners aspired to;
1] connect with the land throughout the year, extending the interior of the house to the surrounding landscape, and;
2] host family and friends in a cozy, warm and inviting space
With a humble nod to the existing structure, the new home maintains a play of gable forms, removing roof eaves to minimize damage from snow accumulation during winter months.
Layering the built forms naturally organizes of outdoor spaces - a courtyard nestles between the public and the private, a protective space from sun and wind, while a southern deck basks in blue bird winter days and connects to a firepit patio set in the landscape away from the house.
Selections of warm wood, robust concrete and sturdy metal showcases a refined material palette which continues from the outside to the interior, all thoughtfully chosen to withstand the world famous snow fall of Sun Valley.
Lake Creek is a family home that blends the past with the future, the indoors to the outdoors, and the owners to the place.
