a remote hilltop cabin formed by sturdy rammed earth walls and red rock views

Location : Teasdale, Utah

Space : 2,000 Square Feet

Completion : 2025

Contractor : Shane Durfey

Photography : James Ransom

Nestling into a sandy hilltop surround of mature juniper trees, a cabin delineated with rammed earth walls to protect it’s inhabitants from the desert elements, and staggering around existing vegetation to minimize impact to the land.

Three parallel earthen walls with no corners or penetrations are an exercise of simplicity and economy. Utilizing the natural existing soil of the site ties the space to the place, forming a direct connection with the environment.

The interior of the cabin is organized by public and private; the public space is a contiguous communal space for gathering with family and friends around food and drinks, while the private rooms offer seclusion and a place to rest.

Now it’s time to get outside and enjoy the immediate surroundings of mother nature.
