three corten clad structures create a family retreat outside a national park

Location : Torrey, Utah

Space : 2,550 Square Feet

Completion : 2015

Contractor : Moosman Construction

Tucked away in a remote desert location just outside of Capitol Reef National Park is a plot of land with some of the most impressive rock formations in the world. The owners of the property requested a design utilizing a small collection of structures detached, yet connected via landscape views, outdoor gathering spaces and varied lounging nooks.

Reflecting the vertically protruding rock megaliths, the sharp lines of the dwellings rise above the dry vegetation and twisted juniper trees. Like the native rock and trees, corrugated Corten panels and cedar siding naturally age to a self-protective patina baked on by extreme desert temperatures. Combined with a well sealed, highly insulated structure, the homes require minimal energy to operate.

Crafted by local contractors and artisans using local materials where possible, this collection of structures resonates with the land and place, which the owners now call home.
